All 951 educational institutions affected by flood in Feni, uncertainty in teaching
Floodwaters have caused extensive damage to educational institutions as well. Two employees are cleaning the classroom. Last Monday at Fazilpur Walia Fazil Madrasa of Feni Photo: Saurabh Das Noorpur Abdul Hakim Bhuiyan Government Primary School of GM Hat in Fulgazi Upazila of Feni. In the terrible floods of the memory, water touched the one-story roof in this school. The water receded a week ago, last August 27. But yesterday Tuesday, all four rooms of the school were alone in the mud. It can be seen on the surface, two workers are cleaning the school. There are three teachers with them. But teaching cannot be customized. The teachers said that there are 95 students from pre-primary to fifth grade in this school. Headmaster Zar Afsan Khanom said that it will take at least four more days to complete the cleaning work of the school. Then they will fix the teaching time. Like this school, all the educational institutions in Feni have been inundated by flood water. The district has 351 secondary schools and madrasas, 559 primary schools and 41 colleges. The number of students is 3 lakh 82 thousand. District administration said that more than half of the institutions are still abandoned. No primary school in the district has started classes till yesterday. Some secondary schools and colleges have started teaching but attendance is low. The concerned office does not have an account of exactly how many institutes have started teaching. However, the district officer held a meeting with the upazila education officials yesterday regarding primary teaching. In the meeting, it was directed to start teaching in the schools which have been cleared. According to the district administration, it is time-consuming to assess the damages of the institutions in terms of money. Furniture, educational materials, buildings, boundary walls and tubewells were destroyed. Due to these reasons it becomes difficult to start teaching. Apart from this, the second floor of many schools in Daganbhuanya and Sonagazi upazilas are still being used as shelters. Apart from educational institutions, district and upazila education offices were also under water. On entering the district primary education office in PTI area of the city last Sunday afternoon, several papers and documents were left to dry in the sun. A computer was also being dried in the sun. In the room of the District Primary Education Officer, the chairs are all wet due to being submerged in water. District Primary Education Officer Nasir Uddin Ahmed said that all the schools including his were submerged in water. Initially a loss account has been submitted to the District Commissioner. It is reported that there has been a loss of Tk 4 crore 20 lakh in the primary school. About the infrastructure damage of secondary schools, the executive engineer of the district education and engineering department, Israt Noorjahan Siddika, said that initially the account of the infrastructure damage of 135 institutions has been submitted to the district administration. However, the accounts have not yet come from some upazilas. Israt Noorjahan said, initially, a damage estimate of 13 crore rupees has been submitted. 41 Colleges have water in all the loins. Narayan Chandra Nath, Director of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Directorate of Chittagong Region, said that the damage was initially more than three crore rupees. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education) Mahmuda Haque told Prothom Alo. Educational institutions have not yet been opened in that sense. Cleaning is in progress. Those that are clear will be taught. But the health aspect of children should also be looked at. Because many institutions are still smelly. And a letter has been given to the education advisor for the books.
